Impact Study Results: Reconciling inconsistency among commercial NGS gene panels via an evidence-based curation platform
Description: Selection of gene biomarkers for diagnostic NGS panels is often highly subjective due to widely variable criteria used in the panel design process across different laboratories, as well as difficulties inherent in attempting to scale what is largely a manual curation process.
The accuracy of this process is critical to ensuring quality patient care, especially as many clinical laboratories are increasingly reliant on commercially available gene panels for their NGS sequencing assays.
We sought to examine the extent to which this manual process results in consistent gene biomarker selection across multiple commercially available gene panels, and to assess whether a more objective, data-driven approach could improve concordance rates across panels.
We found a surprising lack of concordance across multiple commercially available gene panels marketed to the same clinical indications, including both comprehensive hereditary cancers and somatic hematologic cancers.
